Pashinyan continues trying to sit on two chairs: Pyotr Kolchin

Political scientist Pyotr Kolchin commented to Alpha News on the Armenian authorities’ policy toward the EAEU and the European Union. According to the expert, Nikol Pashinyan continues trying to preserve the possibility of cooperating with both the EU and the EAEU simultaneously, while postponing fundamental decisions.

“Pashinyan keeps trying to sit on two chairs declaring priority cooperation with the EAEU, while at the same time making decisions that lean toward the EU; the EAEU side has already set out boundaries for him. The leadership in Yerevan is doing everything it can to delay fundamental decisions, such as holding a referendum on Armenia’s future, in order to keep benefiting from EAEU preferences and economic opportunities for as long as possible,” Kolchin said.

In the political scientist’s view, the EAEU side has already made clear its position on further cooperation and on the one-sided use of the benefits it provides.

“The union has already set out certain conditions and made clear it won’t allow one-sided profiteering from its preferences. Either cooperation will be mutual and honest, or the trade format will be revised,” Kolchin concluded.
