Attempts to silence the Church are deepening the moral crisis: Armenian Diocese of Romania
August 10 2026, 17:50
The Armenian Diocese of Romania has issued a message condemning the judicial proceedings against Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II and six bishops. Bishop Tatev Hakobyan emphasized that Armenia’s Constitution guarantees the autonomy of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and that state interference contradicts the principles of the rule of law and the country’s democratic course.
According to him, after the loss of Artsakh, the authorities, instead of acknowledging their own mistakes and uniting society, are diverting attention from national problems by targeting an institution that has been a pillar of the Armenian world for centuries.
Hakobyan noted that attempts to silence the Church are deepening the moral crisis and damaging Armenia’s international reputation, especially in the eyes of the Christian world.
The diocese called on the authorities to abandon division and encroachment on the Church’s autonomy, and urged the faithful to strengthen prayer, solidarity, and loyalty to the Holy Church. The message includes a prayer for wisdom for the people and authorities of Armenia, and for God’s blessing upon the world.
