EU may in future demand that Armenia take measures against Russia: MEP

The European Union may in the future demand that Armenia take measures against Russia as Yerevan moves closer to the EU’s common foreign and security policy. This was stated to Izvestia by Fernand Kartheiser, Member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg.

“For now, I don’t expect the EU to demand actions against Russia from Armenia in this case. However, I have no doubt that in the future Armenia will be asked to take such measures, given that it has essentially committed to aligning with the EU’s common foreign and security policy. I hope Armenia will be able to resist such pressure, since it is not in its interests,” the MEP said.

On September 15, the European Parliament is set to consider the issue of temporary trade liberalization with Armenia. The initiative envisions lifting tariffs on a significant portion of Armenian exports to the EU for a period of two years. At the same time, Yerevan will be required to comply with Brussels’ conditions, including confirming the origin of goods and cooperating with European customs authorities.
