Great Britain wants to use Armenia to destabilize southern borders, says expert
Expert on Great Britain, PhD in History Igor Kovalev commented on Great Britain’s promise to support Armenia “in the face of threats of retaliation from Russia.”
According to the expert, Great Britain is trying to find its new role in international relations and is interested in strengthening its position at least somewhere.
“It is clear that the threats are not coming from Russia, but the Armenian authorities believe that it was Russia that did not help Armenia in the last war with Azerbaijan, which led to the surrender of Karabakh. Armenia is clearly drifting to the West. Armenia has frozen its membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and is clearly looking for new military and political allies. That is, it is clear that in an unstable, turbulent region, Armenia absolutely needs to have such allies.
At the same time, Great Britain, which is now trying to find its new role in international relations after Brexit, is interested in strengthening its positions at least somewhere, although it is perfectly clear that the United Kingdom especially does not have the strength and means for this. So, why not use Armenia as a country where you can supply, say, British weapons and make good money? That is, here, the issue of business may be even more of a priority than the issue of some geopolitical alignments, although, of course, these alignments are also very important.
Everything will further depend on how well the countries manage to explain to each other who was on whose side, who they supported, and whether they should cooperate or should still think about old, trusted partners who have helped more than once and with whom they are developing some kind of economic and other ties,” Kovalev said.
According to the expert, Great Britain will use Armenia.
“Of course, Great Britain wants to use Armenia as a factor of destabilization on the southern borders to complicate the conduct of a special military operation and escalate the situation, not only in Armenia. I am sure that there will be attempts in Central Asia to take some measures to destabilize the situation; that is, such steps will be taken along the Russian borders, taking into account the uncompromising struggle that we are now having with the collective West, so I absolutely do not rule this out. Of course, Britain will use Armenia. Does anyone really think that Britain will really defend Armenia from Azerbaijan? Of course not,” Kovalev concluded.
