Iran-Armenia relations may be disrupted due to actions of Western countries – Irina Fedorova
Speaking with Alpha News, Irina Fedorova, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, commented on the statement by Iranian Consul General in Syunik that the countries located thousands of kilometers away from the region are trying to interfere in the processes of the South Caucasus and turn Armenia into an area of strategic confrontation.
According to the expert, the mutually beneficial relations between Iran and Armenia may be disrupted due to the actions of Western countries.
“This is a traditional statement. I believe that here, first of all, it refers to the United States. The message is that those countries that are not geographically located in the region of the South Caucasus, the Middle East should not deal with the problems of the states that are located there. I think Mr. Pashinyan’s policy is aimed at rapprochement with the United States, so the emphasis here is that it is preferable to solve all problems between the countries of the region,” Fedorova said.
“I believe that mutually beneficial relations between Iran and Armenia may be disrupted due to the actions of Western countries, primarily the US. The border with Armenia is certainly important for Tehran because it is one of the opportunities to contact with other countries in the region. So, of course, relations with Armenia’s Syunik region are important for Tehran, as well as with Armenia itself,” Fedorova concluded.
