Spreading disinformation is part of diplomatic game –  Pyotr Kolchin on Azerbaijani Defense Ministry statements

Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Pyotr Kolchin commented on the news that the Armenian Defense Ministry refuted Azerbaijan’s allegations that Armenian forces fired at Azerbaijani army positions at the border.

According to the expert, spreading disinformation is part of a diplomatic game.

“As the talks are approaching, the disinformation becomes part of a diplomatic game. Each side is trying to gain certain political points and make the other side look bad. All this is part of diplomacy. What matters is that both Baku and Yerevan jointly welcome the final solution to the dispute. However, such fakes as disinformation are all part of the upcoming work. How the agreement will look like will largely depend on the outcome of these maneuvers. That is why there will be more attempts at spreading disinformation in the coming months, maybe new provocations, but they will unlikely lead to an open conflict, to a new stage of escalation,” Kolchin said.

According to the expert, the Pashinyan administration demonstrates that it fully agrees with Baku’s position.

“There were provocations before the beginning of the conflict and many years earlier, so I am not sure if, in this case, we should pay special attention to the new wave of disinformation. Still, it is important to remain vigilant. So far, I do not see that Azerbaijan would try to use more forceful methods if the agreement fails. Moreover, the Pashinyan administration demonstrates that it fully agrees with Baku’s position, and there are no contradictions in this direction so far,” Kolchin concluded.
