Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Alexey Anpilogov commented on Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova’s statement that she would not want Armenia to face a fate similar to that of Ukraine.

“We clearly understand where the country’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government, which he is now using to destroy the Armenian-Russian partnership and cooperation in any form, are dragging Armenia. The Collective Security Treaty (CSTO) is only one of the main components. In general, the government instills Russophobia, searches for those to blame, and appoints Russia to play this role. And what is most important is that there is no way out of the strategic deadlock,” Anpilogov said.

According to the expert, counting on Western countries to pacify Azerbaijan is, to say the least, naive.

“In addition to the deterioration of relations with Russia, Armenia is now dramatically worsening relations with Iran, considering the chosen course when Armenia rejected Iran’s proposal to protect the Syunik corridor in the form of a military base. So, Armenia is now not only left alone with Azerbaijan but also sandwiched between Azerbaijan and Turkey, between a rock and a hard place, without clear allies.

Thinking that Western countries, which have clearly demonstrated through the example of Ukraine that they do not have the opportunity to participate, much less win, in a major conflict, will pacify Azerbaijan and somehow limit its ever-growing appetites, is at least naive. Based on this, we see such a bitter statement that Armenia is indeed moving away and going the wrong way, taking a path that could be a historical catastrophe for the Armenian people,” Anpilogov concluded.
