Yelena Ananyeva, Head of the Center for British Studies at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, commented on Great Britain’s promise to support Armenia “in the face of threats of retaliation from Russia.”

According to the expert, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wants to integrate Armenia into Western structures, but it will do no good.

“It was a question from a parliamentarian to the deputy minister of defense, and it was about whether Britain could supply weapons to Yerevan. Of course, in this case, Armenia falls into a trap. We should not forget that not very long ago, the head of British intelligence, Richard Moore, came to Yerevan. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is going to separate Armenia from Russia and integrate it into Western structures, and Britain is right there. The fact that nothing good will come of this for Armenia is quite obvious, because Britain is very close to Azerbaijan and Turkey. The main thing for Britain is to separate Armenia from Russia, and it will use any demagoguery to achieve this,” Ananyeva said.

“Armenia is a small state; there are barely 3 million people, and Turkey is a member of NATO, the second largest army in NATO. Azerbaijan is an oil-rich region, so here, naturally, the UK has an interest in Turkey and in Azerbaijan, as well as a desire to just squeeze Russia out of the Caucasus,” Ananyeva concluded.
