The Central Council of Armenians of Germany has expressed its deep concern and alarm over the actions taken by the current government of Armenia against the Armenian Apostolic Church and the unity of Armenian Christianity worldwide.
“In the context of alarming internal and regional security, such a divisive and destructive campaign is, in the Council’s view, a manifestation of weakness and shortsightedness. Both in Armenia and in the Diaspora, internal canonical issues are discussed and resolved exclusively within the church’s structures.
The Council notes with regret that Armenia is rapidly moving away from the democratic principles of the European Union based on the separation of state and church, which is detrimental to the development of its own still fragile and young democracy.
Rather than attempting to denigrate the institutional status of the Armenian Church or issuing inappropriate moral judgments, the government should focus all efforts on eliminating foreign policy threats and ensuring the security of the country’s borders and citizens.
The Central Council of Armenians of Germany strongly condemns the Armenian authorities’ actions against the Armenian Apostolic Church and expresses its support for Holy Etchmiadzin, urging the authorities to refrain from any rash steps that may deepen divisions within Armenian society,” the statement reads.
