Azerbaijan becoming an anti-Russian outpost in the region: Semyon Uralov
Political analyst Semyon Uralov commented to Alpha News on the meeting between the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the expert, Azerbaijan is becoming an analogue of Israel in the region.
“Aliyev is demonstrating his choice, and it is a choice in favor of an alliance with Israel and the United States in the region, as well as a demonstration that he is a regional leader. Therefore, Zelenskyy’s visit is largely a demonstrative gesture, especially after Baku moved toward breaking relations and effectively participating in an anti-Iranian coalition. In my view, these are processes of transforming post-Soviet republics into what they were originally intended to be back in the early 1990s—anti-Russian outposts. That is, an analogue of Israel. Specifically, Azerbaijan is becoming an analogue of Israel in the region—a country that will take part in various ventures and wars in one way or another,” Uralov said.
According to the expert, such steps by Aliyev are already affecting relations between Russia and Azerbaijan.
“This is already affecting Russia–Azerbaijan relations, which some here have considered special, even though Azerbaijan is not part of any alliances or unions. It is therefore surprising why we still have a visa-free regime and other ‘special relations’,” Uralov concluded.
