As part of the “What will happen in 2025? Artsakh, Armenia, New World Order” project, Alpha News talked with Arthur Khachikian, Doctor of Political Science at Stanford University.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been negotiating the so-called peace deal for four years, but the parties have not reached a final agreement on the document. Political scientist Arthur Khachikian believes that Azerbaijan does not intend to conclude a “peace agreement” with Armenia until official Yerevan meets its demands.
“If we immediately surrender the Zangezur corridor, Syunik, change the Constitution, renounce international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Mount Ararat, and allow the Azerbaijanis to return to Armenia, then, yes, there will be a peace agreement that will become the last page in the history of Armenia. Armenia will no longer exist,” Khachikian said.
According to Khachikian, the current situation in the Middle East may negatively affect Armenia. The political scientist does not rule out that Baku may try to get the so-called “Zangezur corridor” with the threat of force.
Baku regularly receives weapons from Israel. Aliyev does what he says. There is a risk of capturing the ‘corridor’, especially when we see what is happening in Syria. According to some sources, the traces of the United States and Ukraine are visible there, they have opened a second front against Russia, and it will be difficult for Moscow to fight in Ukraine, Syria, and the Caucasus. Baku can use this moment, especially if Iran is involved in the war,” Arthur Khachikian noted.
Touching upon Armenia’s foreign policy, Khachikian says that Pashinyan has no foreign policy. Having rejected Russia, Armenia never got to the West. According to the political scientist, Armenia did not receive anything from the West even after ceding Artsakh.
“If we had a foreign policy, we would have heard either from the West, Russia, or another country that they have interests in Armenia, and they consider us their partners. The Armenian authorities said that we should abandon Russia, and the West will help us, but the West deceived us. We received nothing; there are no guarantees of security and no intention to deploy any force here. The government lost. They were deceived, or they directly represent the interests of the West and Turkey; that is, they are agents. We are now in the middle of Russia and the West, who are speaking and acting aggressively. Pashinyan understands that if he leaves the CSTO, relations with Russia will be severed. We will suffer economically, and the people will not like that. It will be taken much more seriously than the loss of Karabakh; that is, they will take to the streets because of this,” Arthur Khachikian said.
