In whose interests is Armenia legalizing Syria’s terrorist government?

There is a certain layer in Armenian society that, after all that has happened to Armenia and Artsakh, is still trying to find positive sides in the authorities’ policy. If we use formulas, we can say that “there are those who are against Pashinyan,” but not against “Pashinyanism.” There are actors who, for one reason or another, are in opposition to the current government (or position themselves that way), but on a conceptual level they support Pashinyan’s policy.
This thesis refers to a number of events: the referendum initiating the process of the EU accession, the charter with the United States, the withdrawal of the Russian military guards from the Armenian border, the withdrawal from the CSTO, the EAEU, etc. Some actors conceptually support this policy; they just don’t like the fact that it’s not them who is doing it, but Pashinyan.
Pashinyan’s similar decisions include the attitude of these circles towards Armenia’s decision to recognize the Palestinian state. This happened in the summer of 2024. In Armenia, this decision was perceived as a “manifestation of the policy of humanism” (meanwhile, how could one talk about humanism in the context of Palestine when this humanism was not demonstrated in relation to Artsakh?), although it was the fulfillment of another demand from official Ankara. It is no coincidence that this decision of official Yerevan was immediately welcomed by the Turkish Foreign Ministry. In other words, those who are allegedly opposed to Pashinyan welcomed his next action aimed at implementing the Turkish preconditions. This, in turn, has made the implementation of new demands the most easily assimilated process.
What are the demands? On December 31, 2024, Ararat Mirzoyan and Hakan Fidan had a phone conversation, from which it could be concluded that Ankara had another “request to Yerevan.” Since shortly before the conversation, the terrorists supported by Turkey had usurped power in Syria, it could be assumed that the “request” could relate specifically to Syria, and more specifically to the act of legalizing the Syrian terrorist government by official Yerevan.
And so, on January 27, in Damascus, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan met with Foreign Minister of the Syrian Arab Republic Asaad al-Shaibani. Kostanyan confirmed Armenia’s readiness to provide humanitarian assistance and the implementation of reforms, as well as to support priority projects for Syria.
We are already used to the fact that the West turns a blind eye to the atrocities of Syrian terrorists against local Alawites and Christians, it is only noteworthy that the “Armenian bastion of democracy” has also joined the chorus of the Western “free world.” They also don’t see anything wrong with Syria today.
Over the past 4.5 years, Pashinyan has made a truly incredible geopolitical and historical somersault. In 2020, he stated that Turkey came to our region to complete the Genocide of 1915, and today he is not just integrating himself into the Turkic world but also doing everything to legalize the genocidal actions of this very Turkic world in other regions. The thirst for security guarantees “works wonders.”
Think about it…
