Sergey Melkonyan: Armenia has not achieved its goals at the UN Security Council session
International expert, Research Fellow at the APRI Armenia Sergey Melkonyan believes that Armenia has not achieved the goals that were on its agenda before appealing to the UN Security Council.
“Armenia has not achieved its goals such as condemning Azerbaijan’s policy towards Artsakh, forcing Azerbaijan to comply with obligations assumed in the statement of November 9, 2020, opening the Lachin corridor, cooperating with international organizations, primarily the Red Cross, sending an independent delegation to Artsakh that will assess the situation,” Sergey Melkonyan said in an interview with Alpha News.
According to him, Armenia has not done enough work with members of the UN Security Council, therefore, statements of certain countries turned to be unfavorable to Armenians.
Sergey Melkonyan mentioned the speech of the representative of the Brazilian delegation who called Stepanakert Khankendi and spoked about the operation of Aghdam road.
However, it is noteworthy that before the session, the Armenian Foreign Minister had a phone conversation with his Brazilian colleague.
Sergey Melkonyan does not expect that the UN Security Council will adopt a resolution on Artsakh because it may not be based on the interests of Armenia.
“Some countries will insist that in this resolution Nagorno-Karabakh should be listed as part of Azerbaijan which does not meet the interests of either Armenia or Artsakh. But if there are no such highlights, it will be almost impossible to accept any claims in these conditions. If sanctions are mentioned in this resolution, it will work, of course, if there is a compromise, but today we see that great powers are not ready to impose unilateral sanctions against Azerbaijan”, the expert noted.
Recall that the day before the UN Security Council convened an emergency session at the request of Armenia which lasted for two hours. It is not yet known if the UN Security Council will adopt a resolution or distribute a letter to the press.
