Vardan Ghukasyan elected Mayor of Gyumri

Vardan Ghukasyan, an opposition candidate from the Armenian Communist Party, has been elected mayor of Gyumri, the country’s second-largest city, following the City Council’s voting session.
As the eldest member, Vardan Ghukasyan chaired the session.
Early elections for the City Council were held in the Gyumri and Parakar communities on March 30. In Gyumri, six parties and three blocs participated in the elections. According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), the ruling Civil Contract party secured 17,183 votes. The Communist Party candidate and former mayor of Gyumri, Vardan Ghukasyan, came in second with 9,727 votes, followed by the Our City bloc, led by candidate Martun Grigoryan, with 7,380 votes.
After the elections, the My Powerful Community party and the Mother Armenia Alliance expressed their willingness to support Ghukasyan as the head of the Gyumri community. On April 4, Martun Grigoryan also announced his readiness to provide the necessary votes for Ghukasyan.
