We are witnessing attempt to change constitution behind people’s back — Vasily Koltashov
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Vasily Koltashov commented on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s readiness to initiate constitutional changes if the Constitutional Court of Armenia rejects the peace agreement with Baku.
“This aligns with the idea that if the government does not like the people, it can choose another one. The constitution is the people and their will, outlined in the document. This means that the people want to live like this. If the Constitutional Court finds that the agreement does not comply with the constitution, the first thing a leader who is truly democratic in spirit should do is to appeal to the people and seek their opinion. This opinion can be requested through a referendum or a nationwide vote, that is, the people must say whether they want to change the constitution at all,” the political scientist noted.
According to the expert, changing the constitution behind the people’s backs on such an important issue is not fair.
“We have heard a lot from Pashinyan and his team that they are staunch democrats, claiming there is no one more democratic than them. But in reality, we are witnessing an attempt to pull off a trick to change the constitution behind the people’s back. And this move, in fact, comes under pressure from Azerbaijan, because it was Azerbaijan that demanded constitutional changes and everyone knows it,” Koltashov said.
