Pashinyan is changing his stance on ‘Zangezur corridor’ – Bogdan Bezpalko
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Bogdan Bezpalko discussed the ongoing tensions between the leadership of Armenia and Azerbaijan and the current situation surrounding the so-called “Zangezur corridor.”
“The image Trump has created of himself as a great peacemaker is, in fact, a fiction. The contradictions remain unresolved, and, accordingly, the hostility between Armenia and Azerbaijan remains. It could escalate into a new phase at any moment, even leading to armed conflict. For this reason, I believe Pashinyan has maintained Russia’s military presence in Armenia despite international pressure, and it is clear he is now beginning to change his stance on the corridor,” Bezpalko said.
According to him, Pashinyan’s stance on the corridor raises questions.
“It is actually quite strange to hear from a politician who has been discussing the ‘Zangezur corridor’ for many years that this problem doesn’t exist, and that the ‘Zangezur corridor’ itself doesn’t exist. Baku has long demanded an extraterritorial corridor connecting Nakhichevan to Azerbaijan, and most likely, Turkey as well. Armenia’s strategic weakness allowed this project to almost come to fruition, but now, apparently at the very last moment, after the agreement was reached in the United States, Pashinyan is beginning to question the deal brokered by Trump,” the expert added.
Bezpalko also noted that the further development of the situation remains uncertain.
“We will soon see what this leads to; perhaps there will be another revision. Pashinyan’s position on the corridor changes if he says this problem doesn’t exist and that the corridor itself doesn’t exist,” Bezpalko concluded.
