Alen Ghevondyan | What to Expect in 2026? | ‘I see the possibility of a change of power, but not through elections’

January 10 2026, 20:00

Political analyst Alen Ghevondyan, speaking with Alpha News as part of the “What to Expect in 2026?” project, emphasized that he sees a possible change of power in Armenia in 2026. However, in his opinion, it will not occur through elections.

“At the moment, the opposition remains in the background when it comes to parliamentary elections, since Pashinyan is bribing people and businesses. He will try to move forward with the help of the administrative system and security structures, while the ‘support’ of the European Union will consist of silence. The EU will ‘support’ us in its own interests, trying to open a second front against Russia or restrain Russia’s presence here. We will be used, but I see the possibility of a change of power in the country in 2026, and it will not happen through elections. It will occur as a result of post-election struggle, followed by corresponding events. Either the Republic of Armenia will continue to exist, or it will become an adjacent territory to some regional power centers,” Ghevondyan said.

According to the political analyst, although Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s rating is quite low, this does not mean that those who oppose him will necessarily support others. In addition, according to Ghevondyan, Pashinyan enjoys the support of the EU.

“EU Commissioner for Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas openly stated that the 2026 elections in Armenia are their elections, and the EU will support the authorities. After this statement, the word ‘state’ turns into a fake. They declare that they will support the current prime minister to ensure his re-election. It is obvious that the authorities perceive threats related to the public legitimacy of the ‘Our Way’ movement, as well as the atmosphere of public hatred. But this is illegitimate,” he added.
