Alexei Likhachev, Director General of the Rosatom state corporation, has stated that Russia has repeatedly put proposals to Armenia regarding the construction of new base-load generation capacity in the country, covering both large-scale and small-to-medium power units.
He also noted that the service life of the Armenian nuclear power plant will be extended to 2036 following a modernization process that Rosatom will be partly carrying out. This represents “a kind of boundary,” beyond which continued operation of the Armenian plant would be unlikely for a whole range of reasons.
“It is not difficult to calculate, of course, that only ten years remain, not merely to adopt, but to implement decisions on the construction of new base-load generation capacity in Armenia. We have repeatedly put relevant proposals to the Armenian government, covering large-scale, medium, and small power units. Each of these options has its advantages and its challenges, but the final word always rests with the client,” Likhachev said.
According to him, it is the Armenian government that must determine the configuration and all future development prospects for the country’s energy system.
