The administration of Istambul has banned again the April 24 memorial event commemorating the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide.
As reported by Agos, an Armenian-language newspaper published in Istanbul, the “April 24 Memory Platform,” which previously organized annual memorial events on that date, stated in a release that the Istanbul administration has banned the event this year as well. The statement notes that the Istanbul administration first introduced the ban during the COVID-19 pandemic, citing the risk of infection. However, the ban has remained in place for six years since then without explanation.
It is worth noting that from 2010 to 2019, annual memorial events commemorating the victims of 1915 were held at Taksim Square in Istanbul and at a number of other locations.
