Russian State Duma warns of broken family ties if Armenia joins the EU

Viktor Vodolatsky, first deputy chairman of the State Duma committee on CIS affairs, Eurasian integration and relations with compatriots, believes that Armenia’s accession to the European Union would sever contacts between many families.
In a conversation with Lenta. ru, he explained that around half of all Armenians live in Russia, and that open borders ensure constant communication and movement. EU accession would require the closure of the border, disrupting these ties.
The deputy noted that a “soft divorce” from Armenia would not entail major economic losses for Russia, although the supply of energy and food commodities at preferential rates comes at a cost to the Russian economy. Vodolatsky expressed hope that many political figures would remain in Armenia who would support the preservation of relations with Russia.
