Political analyst Sergey Markelov commented to Alpha News on the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to China. In the expert’s view, Trump’s trip to Beijing yielded no results.

“Putin’s trip to China means that among the three key world leaders, Putin, Trump, and Xi, the most important thing right now is the attempt to maintain balance. That is, broadly speaking, all three are afraid of only one thing: that the other two might think someone is prioritising one over the other. In response to all of Trump’s ‘wishful thinking,’ the Chinese made an absolutely brilliant PR move. In response to Trump’s claims that ‘everything worked out’ and the trip was a tremendous success, they simply published transcripts of those Beijing meetings, from which it is clear that nothing worked out. Analysts immediately understood that Trump’s trip had fallen through. It was a elegant move,” said Markelov.

According to the political analyst, Putin’s visit to the Middle Kingdom following Trump’s shifts the perception of the global configuration.

“Putin’s trip is needed to rebalance the situation, first, following Trump’s appearance with Xi, and second, to demonstrate that it is formally Russia that is putting the final touches on the new configuration of global agreements. There is a saying that what is remembered most is always the last thing, the last word spoken, the last action taken, the last visit made. And Putin’s appearance immediately after Trump, whether intentionally or not, compels the entire world and the analysts tracking these ideological and economic battles to think: if Putin is travelling there next, literally two or three days after Trump, then it is Russia that will be setting the final terms of the new world order. In other words, Trump opened the portal, so to speak, and Putin will be the one to close it. Put differently, Xi and Putin are in a more advantageous position, because everything that did not work out with Trump can be corrected, and they can arrive at some final agreements. This is very significant from a psychological standpoint in politics, it carries great weight. That is why both the American elites and serious analysts who dig deep into geopolitics understand that the final agreements, including those stemming from Trump’s visit to Beijing, will be worked out in the quiet, measured conversations between Putin and Xi,” Markelov concluded.
