Robert Gasparyan, Alpha News journalist based in the US, shared his commentary on the match between the Argentina and Algeria national teams, which took place on June 17 in Kansas City, Missouri.

“Argentina predictably beat Algeria 3–0 in the first round of the World Cup. The match was a true Lionel Messi show, who once again proved he remains the key figure of the team. Algeria started the game actively and even managed to score, but the goal was ruled out for offside, referee Szymon Marciniak’s decision was absolutely correct. After that episode, the Argentines grew more aggressive and quickly took the initiative. The Albiceleste got into their stride and gave their opponents no chance,” Gasparyan noted.

The attacking contribution came from Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez, while Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez was reliable in goal. He had little to do, but handled everything flawlessly. After the disallowed goal and the first ball conceded, the Algerians effectively vanished from the pitch: a team that had looked confident in training proved unprepared for their opponent’s intensity. Algeria ultimately collapsed and left the impression of a side that will struggle to advance.

According to Gasparyan, the city was alive with football: Argentine fans filled the streets long before the match, creating a festive atmosphere.

“On the organizational side, however, the Americans fell short. Shuttles to the stadium ran poorly, parking was chaotic, and spectators were left frustrated,” the Alpha News journalist noted.

Argentina continues its tradition of a football “cult of personality”: from Mario Kempes in 1978 to Diego Maradona in the 1980s and Lionel Messi today. Messi was once again the hero of the evening, completing a hat-trick and serving as a reminder that even at his age he is capable of deciding matches.

“Lionel Scaloni’s team remains set on repeating the success of 2022. The next challenge awaits England and Croatia, who play tomorrow in Dallas,” Gasparyan added.
