US support is connected with Armenia’s pivot from Russia, says expert
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Bogdan Bezpalko commented on the reports that the United States welcomes the border delimitation agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
According to the expert, US support comes as the Armenian leadership is moving away from Russia.
“US support is connected with the fact that the Armenian leadership is moving away from Russia in every possible way rather than with a peaceful normalization between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The American leadership surely supports this policy and will continue to support it. Any independent behavior, be it in Armenia or another republic of the former Soviet Union, as a rule, suggests deindustrialization, depopulation, and results in military conflicts. This happens when these republics move away from Russia and start their own path to the West,” Bezpalko said.
“I think that if these trends continue, Armenia will face even more territorial losses. It will lose territory in the south, the Zangezur corridor will be opened, and Nakhichevan and Azerbaijan will connect with Turkey. The West will gain access to the Caspian Sea through Turkey. This will threaten not so much the interests of Armenia, but the interests of Iran, China and Russia. I believe that’s the main goal. Armenia is just a bargaining chip here,” Bezpalko noted.
According to the political scientist, what is most perplexing is the call of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to forget about the Armenian Genocide of 1915.
“I was not so much perplexed by the surrender of four villages—different situations happen in public life—but by Pashinyan’s call to forget about the Armenian Genocide of 1915. This is part of the Armenian identity, and it is incomprehensible how an Armenian calls for abandoning the memory of the Armenian Genocide,” Bezpalko concluded.
