At a press conference in the European Parliament, European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen underscored the importance of rejecting Russian energy resources as a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine. At the same time, he ignored a question regarding solidarity with Armenia.

“I was also in [Azerbaijan] recently and brought these issues up with the government. It is also clear that the situation we are in in the European Union, both on energy and also in many other parts of our economy. It’s not one where we have chosen to say if countries don’t fulfill all human rights, we will not trade with them. That is not the policy of the European Union,” Jørgensen said, responding to a question from Alpha News about the EU’s increasing energy imports from Azerbaijan under a new agreement—without taking into account the genocidal policy of Ilham Aliyev’s regime against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.

“We believe the trade is a good thing, but of course we can also use the connections and partnerships that we have to hopefully influence with our values,” he said.

In his remarks, the European Commissioner emphasized the importance of rejecting Russian energy resources as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine. At the same time, he forgot to mention the fact that Azerbaijani resources are also partially Russian. The European Commissioner chose to ignore the question regarding solidarity with Armenia.
