It is thanks to Iran’s position that there have not been bigger problems in Armenia’s Syunik, but this situation may change, Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan said in a press conference when asked whether Tehran, which opposes any border changes in the region, might change its position.
“It is thanks to Iran’s position that we have not had bigger problems in Syunik. If it were not for this position, nothing would have stopped Aliyev. And the Armenian authorities would have said, ‘We’re not going to war over those mountains or anything else.’ The fear of war is, in fact, great. Can this attitude change? Yes, it can. As for Armenia’s course towards the European Union, we can say one thing: today the EU is in a serious crisis, and this crisis has a number of components. It is a crisis of leadership, a crisis of meaning and an economic crisis. The European project itself is in crisis today. To better understand this, it is worth listening to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s speech at the Munich Conference. I simply cannot say it better,” the president added.
