Level of awareness about intellectual property protection in Armenia is low – Karen Tonoyan
Both entrepreneurs and ordinary people are not able to correctly assess the situation and understand what problems they may face in IT, Karen Tonoyan, co-chair of Armenian Bar Association’s Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law Committee, told Alpha News.
“Armenian Bar Association’s Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law Committee was established five years ago, because during this period it was obvious that rapid processes in the field of IT were taking place in Armenia and legislative norms were not enough to overcome the problems. For example, songs, programs, sculpture, and similar artistic fields were not given due attention or respect. We are talking about the rights of authors to intellectual property.
When it comes to IT, it should be noted that the level of awareness among both business professionals and ordinary people is very low. They are not even able to correctly assess the situation and understand what problems they may face. That is why we decided to establish our committee and work on solving these problems,” Tonoyan said.
He stressed that everything that includes knowledge and creative work is subject to protection.
“In Armenia, the number, quality, and offers of such companies are growing every year. All this includes knowledge and creative work that should be protected. For example, if you create a new device and offer a technical solution, this, according to the law and internationally recognized standards, is an object that should be under protection. This is how international economic growth is ensured,” Tonoyan concluded.
