Rubio and Belousov signal a threat to Armenia

May 30 2025, 12:00

The Armenian authorities like to “label” any incomprehensible situation. When someone makes a statement that does not correspond to the “party’s policy”, they risk being branded a “traitor,” a “Kremlin agent,” or a representative of the former authorities. When Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov says that tensions persist around Armenia’s Syunik region, this not only contradicts the propaganda of the Armenian authorities but also contradicts the statement made by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Sardarapat, where he noted, “There will be no war between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”

If Belousov can still be labeled, what can the authorities say about the statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio? A week earlier, he stated that there is a real risk of conflict between Yerevan and Baku, which the US administration is trying to prevent.

Rubio and Belousov are not representatives of the clan-oligarchic system associated with the former Armenian authorities, and they do not conduct targeted propaganda against Pashinyan’s narratives. They are statesmen who understand that when the negotiation process takes place without an intermediary capable of balancing the parties, the risk of conflict is high. This risk is also high when a peace agreement does not have a guarantor—precisely the case in the negotiations between Yerevan and Baku.

Unfortunately, the current situation resembles the realities that preceded the 44-day war in 2020.

Today, the citizens of Armenia must decide for themselves whom to believe—Pashinyan or high-ranking officials from Russia and the United States. Only one thing is clear: Baku is developing the territory of Artsakh—the recent opening of the airport in Lachin is clear proof of this. It is modernizing weapons, regularly conducting military exercises (the last one, which took place in Turkey in May, involved the US military), while Armenia relies on diplomatic deterrence. Instead of exercises, it prefers diplomatic forums.

Once again, instead of an “iron ladle,” we choose a “paper ladle”, hoping that it will withstand boiling water…

Think about it…
