Alexey Mukhin, political analyst and Director of the Center for Political Information, commented to Alpha News on Israel’s government recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

“The recognition of the Armenian Genocide is a ‘condescending gesture,’ because Israel wanted to deal a blow to Turkey. It views Turkey as a rival in the region, a quite active one, that condemns Israel’s actions toward its neighbors. This is simply a direct, linear response from Israel to Turkey. There is no hope or calculation of escalating relations or conflict between Turkey and Israel, but there is a calculation to cause discomfort and, if possible, political pain,” Mukhin believes.

In the opinion of the Alpha News interlocutor, Israel’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide is dictated solely by Israel’s own interests and has nothing to do with its attitude toward Armenia.

“I am afraid that this kind of act is a sort of ‘jab’ at Turkey, but it will not affect Israel’s general attitude toward Armenia. It is unlikely that the Israeli leadership will change its behavior on issues put to a vote at the UN and start voting in Armenia’s favor. I think this is an isolated act that is more unrelated to Armenian interests proper and is connected to the conflict between Turkey and Israel,” the political analyst concluded.
