Andrey Kolesnik, member of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee, commented to Alpha News on the Russian military’s drills for preparing and deploying nuclear forces in conditions of possible war. In the deputy’s view, Russia’s nuclear drills are being conducted to demonstrate readiness to defend the country in any combat scenario in the event of aggression by NATO countries.

“Russia’s nuclear drills are being conducted today, first of all, to test the readiness of the armed forces and their ability to defend the country in any combat scenario that might arise, say, in the event of aggression by NATO countries. Second, it is a demonstration of our readiness, including not only to our own citizens, so that people understand they live in safety and that the country possesses all the necessary weapons capable of inflicting the heaviest defeat on an aggressor. These weapons exist, they are there, it is just that it is not always possible to show this in the media or make it known in some way. At this moment we are showing it. And we are showing it to the adversary on the basis of an SVR press release that was published stating that strikes by combat drones on Russian territory were being planned from Latvian territory. We are showing this so that Western countries understand what awaits them: heavy missiles from various platforms from submarines armed with nuclear missiles, from the air, from aircraft serving as nuclear weapons carriers. Silo-based and mobile-based missiles of the Iskander type are also involved,” Kolesnik said.

According to the deputy, before taking any aggressive actions against Russia, one must think about how it might end.

“One must understand that this will end not only with the loss of statehood of the aggressor countries, but with their very existence. That is, people are risking their own existence. Apparently, their sense of self-preservation has been completely lost. And somehow they need to be jolted. These drills, as I understand it, have served as a bucket of cold water for them,” Kolesnik concluded.
