Sevak Belyan, head of the Ottawa office of the ARF Canadian Committee, spoke with Alpha News about the Armenian authorities’ policy on the Armenian Genocide and its potential impact on both the Diaspora and the positions of the international community.

According to him, since gaining independence, the Republic of Armenia has treated this issue as a priority, which was also enshrined in the core directions of its foreign policy.

“If changes occur in this political agenda, it may also affect the approaches of various countries. Though no drastic changes have been recorded so far,” Belyan noted.

Nevertheless, according to him, certain hints and reactions are already visible in international circles.

“There are voices saying that if Armenia itself is reconsidering its political priorities, perhaps the Diaspora should also lower the bar of its demands, continuing to remember and honor, but at a different level,” he said, adding that such approaches are still unofficial but are already circulating.

Belyan also stressed that such trends could have dangerous consequences, as various countries may reconsider their positions, citing the behavior and statements of Armenia’s current authorities.
