Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan, in an interview with several Armenian media outlets, commented on the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which the Armenian authorities plan to sign. According to Kocharyan, there will be no peace agreement—rather, it will be a document about Pashinyan and his political prospects.
“It will be a contentless document pursuing a domestic political goal. There is a failed leader whose goal is to cling to power at any cost,” he said. When asked whether the current Armenian authorities can speculate on the issue of the return of prisoners of war within the negotiation process, Kocharyan said, “These authorities are not interested in the issue of prisoners of war. Those currently in captivity are the very individuals who, upon their return, could help organize refugees from Artsakh—something the authorities do not need at all.
The current situation is the most convenient for these authorities,” Robert Kocharyan added. In his interview, he also answered various questions regarding foreign and domestic policy, touched upon the events of 2018, the elections of 2021 and the upcoming elections in 2026.
