Protests continue in Los Angeles, with rallies that began last Friday carrying on through Saturday and Sunday. The demonstrators are protesting against US President Donald Trump’s immigration policy.

The protests intensified after so-called ICE officers began conducting searches. Clashes ensued, with protesters throwing stones at police officers and setting cars on fire while waving Mexican flags. Police responded with tear gas, stun grenades, rubber bullets and pepper spray.

ICE typically does not target migrants who have legally applied for residency and are waiting for case processing. Their targets are those with criminal records or court-ordered deportations. There are some immigrants who have already been deported from the United States but have re-entered illegally.

Three streets in downtown Los Angeles are currently blocked off. Military battalions, including Marines, have been deployed about 200 kilometers from the city. Earlier, under Trump’s order, 2,000 National Guard troops were stationed in various cities in California as demonstrations took place not only in Los Angeles but also in other cities across the state.

California’s governor and the mayor of Los Angeles, to put it mildly, do not welcome Trump’s decision and oppose the anti-migrant measures because the governor did not request National Guard assistance under current law.

Protests are also taking place in New York City, with reports of one fatality in Manhattan.

On January 20, the day of his inauguration, Donald Trump in his first speech as the 47th President of the United States, promised to immediately suspend the entry of illegal immigrants in the United States and begin the process of deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants. He also declared a national emergency in response to conditions at the southern US border. Later, Trump thanked the National Guard for a “great job” on social media.
