Is Pashinyan preparing a new political alibi?
December 25 2024, 11:00
Even those who do not follow political news in Armenia day and night might have noticed Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s recent activity on social media. As an experienced SMM specialist, Pashinyan plans his posts early in the morning so that citizens scrolling down their feed on their way to work will definitely stumble upon his post or its repost in Armenian mass media.
It is important to note that between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022 and the end of 2024, Pashinyan almost did not use Facebook, often limiting himself to reposting official news. The main tool for communicating with the world for him was Twitter, now X. Moreover, at one point Pashinyan even made posts on his page in Russian.
During this period, Pashinyan had no need to communicate with the people, with his voters; he needed to “negotiate with external players” to get security guarantees, to understand what scenario was written for him personally and for Armenia in general. To understand all this, including getting answers to his questions, Pashinyan sent signals to the “outside world.”
His active negotiations with the “outside world” resulted in an almost unprecedented active “landing of American diplomats in Armenia in the summer and autumn of this year.” American diplomats visited Yerevan during this period, from Uzra Zeya to James O’Brien. After all this, Pashinyan shaved and became active online again. Moreover, his activity is accusatory and condemnatory towards everyone around him: former presidents, people “who don’t turn off the tap when they shave,” “officials who smoke,” and further down the list… It seems that Pashinyan (having agreed with the “outside world” and already knowing exactly what will happen to him and the country) is preparing an alibi for future processes. The content of the alibi is that he inherited a bad legacy (from bad, uneducated people to a bad political elite), hence the tragedy.
The story of the debates with the former presidents of Armenia should play an important role in this mosaic. As you know, Pashinyan invited them to the debate to discuss the fate of Karabakh and, more specifically, his statement that since 1994, the content of the negotiations has been “the return of Artsakh to Azerbaijan.” If the debates had taken place, regardless of their outcome, Pashinyan would have referred to them, saying that then the whole truth was revealed, and “even then it became clear that Armenia could not be saved.” But since the debate did not take place, he will say that “the presidents refused to debate because they knew that the situation could not be fixed and nothing could be saved.” In other words, the important thing in this play was not the content but the form.
And finally, speaking of 1994 and the fact that “everything has already been stolen before us”: Pashinyan may not have noticed, but with this statement, he called the former head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, a brazen liar. He insulted Borrell, who stated in the summer of 2023 that Pashinyan became the first leader of Armenia to recognize Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan.
“It’s the first time that an Armenian leader, in this case Nikol Pashinyan, has expressed it in such an unambiguous fashion. It was totally unambiguous,” Josep Borrell emphasized last June…
Think about it…
