On August 20, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk held meetings in Yerevan with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan. According to Maxim Seleznev, Russia’s chargé d’affaires in Armenia, the visit had been planned during the Armenian Prime Minister’s earlier trip to Altai.
According to the diplomat, the negotiations were intensive and constructive. A wide range of issues was discussed, including the development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation and the expansion of interaction within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Russian experts drew the Armenian side’s attention to significant differences between the regulatory frameworks of the EAEU and the European Union.
Particular attention was given to the export of Armenian goods to the Russian market. Armenian producers were encouraged to make greater use of EAEU integration mechanisms to simplify access for their products. Both sides also acknowledged the importance of non-tariff protections within the shared customs space.
As Seleznev noted, Overchuk’s visit was part of preparations for the upcoming meeting of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation, which is scheduled to be held in Armenia before the end of the year. In his assessment, the meetings were highly beneficial and helped advance decisions on several key areas.
