Political scientist Andranik Hovhannisyan spoke to Alpha News about strategic interests of the United States in the South Caucasus and the developments surrounding the TRIPP project.
According to him, Syunik has become a key point for Washington in its efforts to contain Iran, Russia, and China. In Hovhannisyan’s view, US Vice President JD Vance’s upcoming visit to Yerevan and Baku has one clear agenda: control over transportation routes.
“If the project is implemented, Armenia’s sovereignty over these communications will be severely limited. There is already information that Armenia will hold only a 26% share in the organization responsible for ensuring the security and monitoring of the road, while the remaining 74% will go to the United States or other external entities. This shows that Armenia is not the main beneficiary of this program,” Hovhannisyan said.
He noted that special groups from the United States have already arrived to study the routes passing through Armenia.
“The region has become a point of geopolitical confrontation, where the West is trying to strengthen its positions by using the situation in Ukraine and the need for new logistical routes,” the political scientist added.
