Daron Acemoglu, Turkish-American economist of Armenian descent, MIT professor, and 2024 Nobel Prize laureate in economics, declined to comment on the question of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s invitation to contribute to Armenia’s economic development, during a conversation with journalists at the Eurasian Development Bank’s (EDB) annual meeting and business forum in Almaty.

“This is all quite complicated, so let’s move on to the next question,” Acemoglu told journalists.

Touching on Armenia’s economy, he noted that digital transformation opens new opportunities for the country. At the same time, he said, the fact that Armenia is a small country with limited domestic demand and is cut off from its natural markets presents certain challenges.
