Armenia has worsened its position in the World Press Freedom Index, falling from 34th to 50th place, according to the 2026 report by Reporters Without Borders.

Despite Armenia’s diverse media landscape, it remains polarized. The country is facing an unprecedented level of disinformation and hate speech, fueled by domestic political tensions, security issues on the country’s borders, and its complex relationship with Russia and the European Union, according to the report.

In Armenia, journalism as a profession is often devalued and subjected to hate speech, with political figures accusing journalists of “corruption” or serving the interests of their opponents.
“Journalists are often subjected to pressure, insults, and violence from both government officials and opposition politicians and their supporters, both in parliament and on the streets and in social media.
