Armenia’s accession to EU will not give it any security guarantees – Vladimir Kireev

Speaking with Alpha News, Vladimir Kireev, head of the analytical department of the International Eurasian Movement, commented on the news that the Armenian parliament adopted in the first reading a bill on the start of the EU accession process. According to the expert, those countries that had previously joined the EU were disappointed and did not receive the expected effect.
“Such a step as joining a large integration project seems logical, but there is a question of how justified it is in reality. We know that the European Union was created over many decades. And the countries that initiated the creation of the European Union were rich, economically developed countries such as the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Great Britain. At that time, they had the highest standard of living, but the new countries that joined the European Union gradually became disappointed because they did not receive the same effect from joining this prestigious bloc. In the new EU countries, the standard of living has not risen to the level they expected. For most of the former Soviet republics, as well as the countries of Southern Europe, such hopes have turned out to be unfounded. The same can be said about security; the European Union cannot protect its interests anywhere in the world, even on its own territory. In the EU countries, there are a large number of migrants who have entered its territory. In addition, over the past 10 years, all of Europe has come under the power of drug syndicates, slave trade, and various mafia groups, which have practically destroyed this image of a successful region of the planet with a high level of security,” Kireev said.
According to the political scientist, even if Armenia is accepted into the EU, this will not provide any improvement in its standard of living and will not give any security guarantees.
“The question of whether the European Union will conflict with Turkey is clear from the example of Greece, where Turkey regularly organizes military provocations. And the question of Turkey and Greece entering a state of direct war is quite relevant. Turkey has been in line to join the EU for almost 50 years. The European Union has conflicts even within its borders. If the EU was initially created with the goals of economic development, at the moment it is driven more by geopolitical motives, intentions to expand borders, and the desire to compete with Russia and have influence in the world. So, Armenia may be accepted as an EU member, but this will not provide it with any increase in the standard of living, investments, or security guarantees simply because the European Union is not able to provide this. The only thing that Armenian citizens can get is a visa-free regime when traveling to EU countries,” Kireev concluded.
