Almost five months after the parliamentary election, the Austrian People’s Party, the Social Democrats, and NEOS – The New Austria and Liberal Forum have agreed to form a coalition. The Freedom Party of Austria, which won the September 2024 elections and opposes anti-Russian sanctions, did not join the coalition. Alpha News spoke with Garo Chadoian, a member of the Social Democratic Party, about this topic.
“The far-right Freedom Party of Austria won the parliamentary election, followed by the conservatives, social democrats and liberals. During the election campaign, all other parties ruled out the possibility of forming a coalition with the Freedom Party of Austria. Consequently, the Austrian president gave the Freedom Party a mandate to form a government. He negotiated with the Social Democrats for months about forming a coalition, but no agreement was reached,” he said.
He spoke in detail about the attitude in Austria towards the European Union.
“They eventually get a mandate to form a government together with the Freedom Party, but fail again. Both sides claimed that they were making too many demands on each other. The problem arose because the Freedom Party does not have a very positive policy towards the European Union. For example, it issued a statement that the EU flag should be removed from all government buildings,” Garo Chadoian emphasized.
