Joseph Aoun, President of Lebanon, issued a statement on the anniversary of the tragic events of 1915, emphasizing that this tragedy remains an unhealing wound on the conscience of humanity. He noted that Lebanon has throughout its history been a steadfast refuge for the Armenian people, who have become an integral part of the country’s national unity.
The statement notes that Armenians in Lebanon have never been guests, but full partners in the building, development, and prosperity of the state. Their contribution spans a wide range of fields, from economics and culture to politics and education, leaving a significant mark on the history of modern Lebanon.
Aoun also stressed that preserving the memory of the tragedy is essential to preventing such events in the future. In his words, it is precisely this memory that must strengthen national unity, protect human dignity, and inspire the creation of a future worthy of the sacrifices of their ancestors and the hopes of generations to come.
