‘The question is to what extent it will be effective’: Senator Klimov on EU mission in Armenia
Speaking with Alpha News, Andrey Klimov, Deputy Chair of Russia’s Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, commented on the Armenian parliament’s ratification of the agreement on the status of the EU mission.
According to the expert, one of the main questions is to what extent this monitoring mission will be practically effective, considering that the Turkish side does not agree with the EU on everything.
“Armenia is a sovereign state; at least they think so. Obviously, Armenia has the right to enter into relations with other countries and international organizations. However, in the current international context, various observers have many questions. One of the main questions is to what extent this monitoring mission will be practically effective, considering that the Turkish side, to say the least, does not agree with the European Union on everything. The same thing applies to Azerbaijan.
I doubt Baku will treat any such missions with reverence. I can’t imagine how the European Union, with all its desire, can do something, taking into account geography. But I reiterate that the Armenian government can conduct business with anyone it wants, but the question is to what extent it will be effective. I personally cannot say. I have no reason to say that this will be a very effective solution,” Klimov concluded.
