On June 1, 33 environmental and human rights organizations in Turkey held a rally in Igdir calling for the closure of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Armenia, Ermenihaber reports. The protesters noted that, despite the facility’s operational lifespan officially ending in 2025, it continues to function.
Sabahat Aslan, president of the Mersin Nature and Environment Association, said the Metsamor NPP has an extremely negative impact on the environment and human health, especially in Igdir province.
“Metsamor NPP is one of the most hazardous nuclear power plants in the world. It has an extremely negative impact on the environment and human health, especially in Igdir province. We appeal to all international organizations dealing with nuclear power plants and to the Armenian government to shut down the Metsamor NPP before Armenia turns into Chernobyl and Fukushima. The relevant bodies of our country must take action immediately. Our struggle will continue until the plant is closed,” he said.
It should be noted that Turkey consistently calls for the closure of the Metsamor NPP, claiming that it poses “a threat not only to Turkey, but also to the entire region”.
