MEP: There is a shift in the European Commission towards making stronger steps

“I expect from today’s resolution to be very strong because a lot of the groups are standing on the ground and, first of all, calling ethnic cleansing what is happening to the people fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenians naturally,” Czech MEP Markéta Gregorová said in an interview with Alpha News.

She noted that MEPs are very critical of the actions of other European institutions that signed a memorandum of understanding, concluding a deal with Azerbaijan on oil and gas supplies.

“All of this will hopefully, and I’m actually certain of it, make it to the resolution. I expect that firm statements will be made. I also expect some strong statements in the debate. It will be the question for the future how it will influence the European Council and Commission, which are the most important in potentially sanctioning Azerbaijani officials, but I can see now, especially in the Commission, there are strong voices supporting this. So, I do hope this support of the European Parliament will make an impact,” she said.

Gregorová added that until today she had been critical of everything that was said, of the memorandum of understanding, which, as usual, was a business matter. “But now Azerbaijan has really crossed a lot of red lines, and I see the shift, especially in the Commission, towards making stronger steps, especially, for instance, potential sanctioning of individuals. So, I do hope that now it will have an impact,” the MEP said.
