Armenia does not wish to stoke tensions in Armenian-Russian relations. Ararat Mirzoyan, Armenia’s foreign minister, said this at a joint press conference with his Lithuanian counterpart on May 19.
“We are not going to formalize a political ‘divorce’ with any of our partners, including Russia. In general, politics and diplomacy throughout history have not particularly recognized such divorces. We are also not going to create tensions in Armenian-Russian relations. We are partners bound by numerous ties, and we are inclined to develop these mutually beneficial relations in an atmosphere of healthy dialogue. Are there any problems? Of course. But I think there are problems in all possible relationships in the world, and one simply needs to find constructive solutions to those problems,” Mirzoyan said.
Regarding Russia’s reminders that simultaneous membership in the EAEU and the EU is not possible, Mirzoyan noted that Armenia understands this perfectly well.
“We will continue our rapprochement with the EU. When that happens, when it matures, the moment will come when we will have to make a decision right then and there, whether we should become a member of one or another family of nations, and we will make that decision. There is nothing new here, and we do not need to be told about it from outside,” he said.
