Today, Aliyev has a feeling that he can get much more, Hermine Mkhitaryan, an expert in the Hayatsk think tank, said in an interview with Alpha News.

“I am inclined to think that after Aliyev’s refusal to meet in Granada, the RA authorities will quietly say that they were ready to sign the contract in any way. On the other hand, we have a rather disproportionate and dangerous situation today, depending on whether the Armenian authorities are ready for compromise. The Armenian government is ready to reach this peace agreement at any cost, and Aliyev has already formed such an impression that they could negotiate about much more things than even, for example, a month ago.

The Azerbaijani side explained why they refused. According to them, the main reason was the destructive conduct of France and the non-participation of Turkiye,” Mkhitaryan said.

According to her, these are only official or publicized justifications, while the reality is deeper.

“Today, Aliyev has a feeling that he can get much more; he is again trying to maneuver towards a new negotiation process. Today we have a rather tense border situation, we have become the scene of a geopolitical conflict. The positions of the power centers are also important, but what the Azerbaijani authorities are doing is more than obvious and clear. They are trying to get more, they know that they can and they are trying to do it,” Mkhitaryan said.

In her words, if months ago Azerbaijan could be satisfied with the so-called “Zangezur Corridor”, today it is unlikely to limit itself only to that.

“They have been talking about the ‘Zangezur Corridor’ for a long time. I believe that Aliyev’s appetite today is not limited to that corridor, its status or the territory. The problems are growing, judging by the fact that the opposite side does not protect his interests in any way,” the expert concluded.
