Vladimir Shapovalov, associate professor of comparative political science at MGIMO, shared his commentary on the Hungarian parliamentary elections with Alpha News. In his view, the convincing victory of the Tisza party was not predicted during the campaign.

“At best, its supporters were expected to gain a narrow lead. Where did such a large result come from, effectively a constitutional majority? First and foremost, it must be emphasized that this result is entirely and wholly a consequence of the European Union’s active and aggressive policy directed against Viktor Orbán, compounded by fatigue among the Hungarian part of society and certain socioeconomic problems within the country. That is what produced this outcome. Péter Magyar and his European handlers actively employed a color revolution playbook, the key element of which is accusing the ruling elite of corruption. It should be noted that these accusations played an important role. A negative factor was also the position of the United States. Donald Trump and JD Vance did more to turn Hungarian voters away from Orbán than to win them over, since anti-ratings of the current American president and his administration are very high in Europe, including Hungary, especially in light of the US-Iranian military adventure,” Shapovalov said.

According to the analyst, the Hungarian election results cannot be welcome news for Russia, as Orbán was a consistent defender of Hungary’s national interests and was not a puppet in the hands of European bureaucracy.

“Magyar’s team achieved its main success in single-member constituencies, where little-known politicians from the Tisza party defeated their opponents. Here we are witnessing a political technology we have already seen before, in France in 2017, when the little-known politician Emmanuel Macron and his party, built up in the course of the campaign, won the election, and in Ukraine, where Volodymyr Zelensky and his Servant of the People party, also formed during the election campaign, likewise prevailed. In other words, we are dealing with similar processes, where voters cast their ballots for little-known politicians in the hope of a better future. The election result is an unambiguous victory for the European Union and the Euro-bureaucracy, an unambiguous loss, at least for the time being, of Hungarian sovereignty, and a defeat for Trump. Such results are naturally unwelcome for Russia, since Orbán was a consistent defender of Hungary’s national interests and was not a puppet in the hands of European bureaucracy, which cannot be said of Magyar,” Shapovalov concluded.
