Ursula von der Leyen is the EU’s “overseer:” Alexey Leonkov
Alexey Leonkov, military analyst, commented to Alpha News on the visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Azerbaijan and Armenia, scheduled for July 1–2.
“Ursula von der Leyen is, one might say, the EU’s ‘overseer.’ That is, she must make sure that Armenia and Azerbaijan have definitively set out on the path of severing relations with the Russian Federation and have chosen so-called European integration. Basically, this mission was previously carried out, for example, in Ukraine by Victoria Nuland, who also traveled there under various officially stated pretexts, while in reality checking how seriously those forces were committed to implementing the anti-Russian scenario. In addition, Ursula von der Leyen oversees many EU funds and promises certain assistance to Azerbaijan and Armenia in exchange for severing integration ties with the Russian Federation, including trade and economic ones. In return, she will offer some compensation packages, but on the principle of: ‘First sever the ties, then you’ll get something,'” Leonkov stated.
According to the expert, the European Commission President’s visit to the region pursues different goals depending on the country.
“There is an imbalance here, because Azerbaijan is, shall we say, more uninhibited in this regard: it receives guests from Turkey, Israel, the US, and the UK. Armenia, on the other hand, has been, in quotes, ‘under the burden’ of the Russian presence, and now, as they say, all efforts are shifting. Most likely, Ursula von der Leyen is traveling to Azerbaijan on a friendly visit to discuss European projects related to the TRIPP transport corridor, also known as the ‘Trump corridor.’ As for Armenia, she is going there to launch numerous programs that can be grouped under a common name, anti-Russian programs. There was the ‘Ukraine’ project, which became the ‘anti-Russia’ project; now we are seeing the beginning of the ‘anti-Russia’ project on Armenian territory,” Leonkov concluded.
