Government actions have weakened Armenia – Diaspora relations: Gevorg Bagratuni
The policies of Armenia’s current authorities are aimed at weakening ties with the Diaspora, Gevorg Bagratuni, chairman of the public organization “National United Armenia,” said in an interview with Alpha News. According to him, one of the first steps in this direction was the abolition of the Ministry of Diaspora, after which relations between Armenia and the Diaspora noticeably deteriorated.
“We have a large Diaspora that cannot be effectively managed through a single individual. With this step, systemic contact between Armenia and the Diaspora was effectively disrupted,” he noted.
Bagratuni emphasized that, despite its potential, the Diaspora needs Armenia as a unifying center. Otherwise, only local initiatives emerge, weakening the overall potential. “This is a dangerous approach,” he added.
He also drew attention to the authorities’ rejection of Mount Ararat as a symbol.
“For the Diaspora, Ararat is not just a mountain. It is a symbol of homeland, identity, hope for return, and the future. When this symbol is deliberately pushed out of various platforms, it can also affect the spiritual connection between Armenia and the Diaspora,” Bagratuni noted.
