‘If you want peace, then surrender; this is Aliyev’s approach’: Arthur Martirosyan
The Armenian side deliberately misunderstands the game, in other words, does not understand what Aliyev wants, Arthur Martirosyan, Senior Consultant with CMPartners, told Alpha News.
“We should follow not only Aliyev’s rhetoric but also his actions. I have been saying for three years now that there will be no peace agreement until Aliyev achieves his goals. The Armenian side is simply deliberately misunderstanding the game; in other words, it does not understand what the other side wants. Today we are witnessing the consequences that have arisen precisely because of this misunderstanding. That is, Aliyev wants peace, but only on his own terms; this is his goal, which has always been and remains so. How Mr. Pashinyan understands what is happening is clear from his latest response,” Martirosyan said.
He stressed that, based on Pashinyan’s words, Aliyev needs legitimacy for the escalation.
“When we hear the word ‘legitimacy’, we understand that it works when there is a global system and laws. To some extent, this is true, but now we see that we are entering a stage when the system created at the Yalta Conference is completely collapsing. For this reason, the parties with power and will can dictate or get what they want. Aliyev understood this very clearly, and now he needs a situation in which he can achieve his goal with the least expenditure of force.
This concerns the force factor. But he also understands that even without the use of force, he can force Armenia to give him everything he wants. His negotiating approach is this: if you want peace, then surrender. Some may say that Pashinyan is taking a diplomatic approach when he does not respond to Aliyev, but there are things that need to be responded to,” Martirosyan concluded.
