The 17th Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale is taking place until January 5. One third out of 280 works were made specially for the Voices of Rivers exhibition, reflecting the relationship between humans and the environment.
The Lyon Biennale traditionally exhibits works by the participants of the International Art Residency Program. This year’s exhibition brought together works by five French and six foreign masters, presented in partnership with international institutions.
One of them was the New York-based gallery Atamian Hovsepian Curatorial Practice, which invited Armenian artist Meri Karapetyan to Lyon. Rethinking the impact of the armed conflict in Artsakh, the artist explores the notion of borders in her works of the last three years. She has created her sculpture “Untitled”, made in the form of barbed wire, especially for the Biennale. To get to the next hall, one has to overcome the barriers. In this way, Meri Karapetyan offers a new perspective on borders and obstacles.
